"A piece of warm soil" cross-disciplinary aesthetic course preparation workshop

Today, 1/19, Ludong Elementary School in Changhua County, a benchmark school for the cross-disciplinary aesthetic education program, held a workshop for the core teacher team to prepare the "A Piece of Soil with Warmth" curriculum program. The participating teachers are 7 fifth-grade subject teachers and class tutors, and the teaching areas include Chinese, music, nature, social studies, and fine arts.

The pottery workshop in the morning was prepared for the students' nature class theme "Soil nourishes succulent plant cultivation". In the workshop, teachers used the method of splicing ceramic tiles to shape containers of different shapes. Although the splicing of ceramic tiles seems simple, there are many details in the production process that require soil preparation, joining and repairing. Through the actual operation of the teachers, they can provide more guidance on the material technology of ceramic creation when guiding students to create in the future. Then, through the coloring method on the shape dyeing board (the method of applying color layer by layer using makeup clay and masking shape boards), the colors after firing are superimposed to create layers, presenting a sensual and creative expression under the rational arrangement of makeup clay color blocks.

"A piece of soil with warmth" combines the connection between Lukang's history and culture and soil to conceive a cross-disciplinary course. In the afternoon preparation meeting, teachers invited cultural and historical workers from the Jasmine Humanities and Environmental Education Center in Lukang to discuss the outdoor education plan of real-life puzzle solving in the neighborhood. The relics of unearthed and clay sculptures are integrated with the characteristics of the town's Qing Dynasty architecture, including red bricks used in construction (handmade bricks from the Qing Dynasty and modern bricks), the adhesive soil between bricks from the Qing Dynasty, chrysanthemum windows in the shape of tiles, green-glazed flower windows of Shiyi Building, pottery plaques on the door brows of ancient houses, and Cochinchinensis and Jianni in temples. In addition, it is planned to observe the three most common plants in idle old houses, namely, banyan trees, thorn trees and paper mulberry trees, in the hope that students can observe the history, culture and ecology of the growing areas from the neighborhood.

In today’s joint learning and discussion, we can observe how teachers discover problems through actual participation and how they make the teaching plan content more substantial, fluent and practical through discussion and ideas. The teaching team of the course creators hopes that students will start from a small beginning, bring in emotional warmth while observing the connection between soil and place, and internalize the culture of their hometown as their own nourishment.
