National Taiwan Normal University has launched a cross-disciplinary excellence pilot program in aesthetic education. National Beimen High School combines fine arts, Chinese language, performing arts and other courses with the theme of "Day Reading and Playing in the Golden Tang" to lead students out of the classroom and experience the beauty of the place. After a semester of study, an achievement exhibition was held. Chen Liguo, chairman of Jintang Hall, attended the exhibition and affirmed the students' positive and hard-working attitude. He also expressed his affirmation of the teachers' promotion of local cultural experience.
Beimen High School Principal Shen Wenyin said that outdoor teaching allows students to deeply experience what they learn in the classroom. In line with the National Taiwan Normal University's cross-disciplinary aesthetic education excellence pilot project, art and Chinese language teachers led students to visit the Jintang Temple, which is the largest in the area. The temple has a long history and hosts the 3-year 1-course Xiaolong Xiangke Jiao Ceremony, which is a major religious event in the southwest coastal area of Tainan. Through the course, students can learn about the history of the temple, cultural relics and related history, and it is also an inheritance and learning.
Art teacher Zhang Lizhong and Chinese teacher Feng Huajun in charge of the plan jointly said that cross-disciplinary aesthetic teaching, combined with local temple culture, and the architectural vocabulary conveyed by traditional cut-and-paste art, allow students to understand the cultural heritage of traditional folk tales and also reflect the 108 new curriculum. Learning elements such as artistic cultivation and aesthetic literacy, interpersonal relationships and teamwork, multiculturalism and international understanding.
This course was held in the first semester of the 108th academic year. Students visited the Jintang Palace to observe the cut-and-glue works of the famous cut-and-glue master He Jinlong. Master He Jinlong’s cut-and-glue works of roof ridges, raft heads, wall blocking and exterior walls are important in modern Taiwan. A masterpiece handed down from generation to generation. Students interpret and recreate the cut-and-paste images. The works of each group include historical stories, folk tales, romances, opera stories, etc., and then present them in the form of illustrated magazines and newspapers to showcase the results learned in the course.
Participating students said that they had learned a lot from the Jintang Palace, studied the historical background of cut-and-paste art, typed and created pictorials, created performing arts, etc., and it was also very interesting. In addition to learning a wealth of experience, I also experienced the beauty of local culture, which cannot be learned in the classroom. I hope there will be more similar courses and have the opportunity to leave the classroom again. Chairman Chen Liguo said that if such activities are held in the future, Jintang Palace can cooperate with commentators to assist in explanations, and can also provide financial support, so that students can fully understand and appreciate historical monuments.
